The Atlanta Falcons are turning the page at quarterback, naming Michael Penix Jr. as their starter for Thursday night’s matchup against the Green Bay Packers. For Falcons fans, the move represents more than just a change under center—it could be the beginning of a new chapter for a team searching for consistency at quarterback.

Atlanta’s start to the 2026 season has been rough. The Falcons are 0-2, and their quarterback situation has been a major storyline. Tua Tagovailoa was initially expected to start the season, but an oblique injury kept him out. That forced Cooper Rush into the starting role for the first two games, and the results were difficult. Rush completed just 56.4% of his passes for 229 yards and threw four interceptions before being benched during Atlanta’s 34-3 loss to Carolina.

Now, the Falcons are turning to Penix.

The former first-round pick has been working his way back from a season-ending knee injury suffered in November 2025. Atlanta was cautious with his return, but Penix has now been medically cleared and is ready to make his 2026 debut.

Penix brings a strong arm, confidence in the pocket and plenty of potential. Before his injury last season, he had shown flashes of why Atlanta selected him eighth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The timing could not be more important. Through two games, Atlanta has struggled to create consistent offense and has yet to make a red-zone appearance.

Penix now gets his opportunity to change that. With weapons like Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts around him, the Falcons will hope their young quarterback can provide stability and give the offense a spark.

Thursday night in Green Bay will be Penix’s first chance to show Atlanta what its future at quarterback could look like.
