LaMelo Ball led the Hornets with 27 points, including a decisive layup with 14.2 seconds remaining. Miles Bridges contributed 29 points, while Nick Smith Jr. added 12 points and Mark Williams recorded 10 points and nine rebounds. The Hornets shot 36.3% from the floor. 

LeBron James led the Lakers with 26 points and 11 assists, including 16 points in the fourth quarter. Rui Hachimura had 17 points and eight rebounds. Luka Dončić, in his third game with the Lakers, recorded 14 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists but struggled with his shooting. The Lakers led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter but saw their lead vanish due to a strong 23-3 run by the Hornets. 

This loss marks the second defeat in three games since James and Dončić began playing together, revealing the Lakers’ ongoing challenges in meshing their star talents. Shannon Sharpe highlighted the Lakers’ recurring third-quarter slumps as a critical flaw, noting their tendency to come out flat after halftime. 

The game marked the first NBA game after the All-Star break, with Charlotte capitalizing on crucial plays in the final moments to secure the win. 

The Lakers, currently fifth in the Western Conference with a 32-21 record, aim to rebound in their upcoming games against the Portland Trail Blazers and the Denver Nuggets.
