The Tennessee Volunteers faced a heart-wrenching 78-76 loss to the Ole Miss Rebels on March 5, 2025, in Oxford, Mississippi. Despite leading by as many as 12 points in the first half, Tennessee’s defense faltered in the second, allowing Ole Miss to seize control. 

A pivotal moment occurred with 7.5 seconds remaining when Ole Miss forward Jaemyn Brakefield secured an offensive rebound and converted a putback, giving the Rebels a decisive lead. Tennessee’s Igor Milicic Jr. had earlier tied the game with a four-point play, but his subsequent attempt to force overtime missed, sealing the Volunteers’ fate. 

Jordan Gainey led Tennessee with 17 points, but the team struggled in the paint, being outscored 46-20 by Ole Miss. This defeat dropped Tennessee’s Southeastern Conference record to 11-6, underscoring the competitive nature of the conference as teams vie for favorable tournament seeding. 

Looking ahead, Tennessee will aim to rebound in their upcoming SEC tournament matchup against Vanderbilt, seeking to regain momentum before the NCAA tournament.
